Handmade felt applique - a selection of simple step by step master classes and photo ideas
Applique - this is a very interesting and fascinating creativity. Even restless children can cut out figures with scissors and glue them on a paper or cardboard base for quite a long time.
In most cases, applique means work with paper and glue, but applications can be made from different materials. If you are new to the creative field, you may enjoy making applications from felt. They are made quite simply, and look bright and unusual.
Felt is a very interesting material. It differs from colored paper or fabric, products made of it are pleasant to the touch. It is easy to cut out and perfectly retains its shape without crumbling at the edges, and it can be decorated, for example, with embroidery.
You can decorate clothes with felt - felt figures will look good on T-shirts, jeans or dresses, which will allow you to create things for your child with your favorite fairy tale or cartoon characters.
What will be needed to make a felt applique?
Ideas can be limited only by imagination. There are many variants of felt applique - they can consist of several large, as well as a large number of small parts. The list of products can be endless:
- Magnets;

- Toys;
- Paintings, etc.
The necessary materials and tools should be prepared in advance, so as not to be distracted by searches during the process of work. To make the appliqué you will need:
- Thick felt (for the base);
- Thin felt of different colors;
- Patterns of parts;
- A thick paper for patterns;
- Pencil;
- Scissors;
- Glue (thermal gun);
- Needle and thread (better embroidery).
Patterns and templates for individual parts can be made on their own using standard stencils. Ready templates of complex contours can be found in magazines devoted to handicrafts, or downloaded from the Internet.
Creating felt applique - master classes
In order to master the technique of making a composition from felt, you can make several objects for interior decoration.
Magnet in the shape of a heart
- Cut out a heart-shaped blank from felt and stitch it with a decorative stitch, such as a buttonhole stitch.
- Apply the decoration elements according to the pattern and fix them with decorative stitches.
- Glue the magnet to the back with a hot air gun. You can also make a volumetric heart, for this you will need to cut out two blanks, and after decorating sew both parts, putting inside a little synthetic material and a magnet.
- In decorating the heart-magnet, you can also use beads and sequins.
The sun made of felt
This bright figure can serve not just as a craft, but also as a patch on children's clothes. From bright yellow felt cut out the sun and the rays, put them on top of each other so that the lower parts look out from under the upper ones.
Sew the parts together. The circle in the middle can be further decorated with tambourine stitch, placing it in a spiral from the center of the sun. Attach the sun to a cardboard, fabric or felt base and sew it on the clothes.
Flower from felt
You can decorate clothes, a card or a picture with a felt flower. The main detail will be an oval petal with pointed ends. For one flower you will need three pieces. The middle petal is placed on the appliqué base and overlapped by the side petals. Then the side petals are sewn with a stitch, and the middle one with a darning stitch. Stems and leaves can also be cut out of felt, and you can embroider or make from decorative cord of suitable thickness.
Painting with an owl
A picture with an owl can become an interesting accent in the interior of a child's room. Older children who are already bored with cutting out whole figures can assemble a picture from small parts. Eyes, beak, feathers and paws are attached to the silhouette of the owl, and the feathers should go behind each other and the paws - under the figure. Separately "assembled" a branch of brown and green felt, on which the owl will sit. On the basis of the picture first sewed branch, then the owl. The finished picture is glued to cardboard and inserted into a frame.
Decorative panel
To create a beautiful decorative panel, it is better to print ready-made templates and a color sample. Cut out pieces of felt in a suitable color (blue for the sky, green for the grass, brown for the tree trunks, etc.). The elements must be sewn to the base and sewn or stitched with a sewing machine. As in the previous product, the parts are attached to the basis of "layers", crossing and going over each other. Smaller elements are easier to glue rather than sew on. Small flowers will look good on the panel, made of sequins and fastened with a bead in the middle. The finished product is framed.
Applique from felt is easy enough to make, so even novice masters will cope with them. Over time, experience and confidence of the hand will come, and the creation of felt applique will become an interesting activity for children and adults.
