• Next, you need to thoroughly wash the gourd without damaging the integrity of its surface, and dry it.
• Then you need to cut the top of the fruit with a sharpened knife. If you intend to make a lantern with a lid, pick a pumpkin with a tail, so it will be easier to open it.
• The next step is to use a spoon to take out all the pulp of the fruit, and you have to do it as carefully as possible, so as not to damage the pumpkin rind. The thickness of the skin should remain within 1.5 cm. You can also rub the inside of the pumpkin with sandpaper or a brush to remove the pulp completely.
• For the pumpkin to stand for a long time unchanged, you need to smear the inside with a disinfectant such as alcohol or you can also use diluted bleach.
• Then you need to leave the pumpkin in the air to dry. To do this, lay the fruit on a towel, and absorbent cloths inside it. As the napkins get wet, you will need to replace them with new ones. This method of drying will keep the pumpkin from changing in size and volume as it dries.
• The best way to cut out the designs on the pumpkin rind is with a sharp knife. It is necessary to use homemade stencils: if it is a pumpkin head, cut out sinister eyes, nose and mouth on the pumpkin, if a simple lantern, any figures that come to mind. Also, you don't need to cut out small details - it's inconvenient; larger drawings on the lantern look more effective. All cuts should be treated with any vegetable oil, so the lantern will be stored longer.
• If the lantern will be lit with a candle, one top cut will suffice: the candle will be placed on top. If the light will be some kind of lantern, it will be necessary to make still the bottom of the pumpkin: the pumpkin will cover the lantern standing on the table.
